What We Do

Our methods are designed to respect our animals, to see them as living creatures with a personality, will and purpose.

Our Mission

Our mission is to apply the principle of ahimsa everyday, in every way. Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word meaning non-violence or non-harming. Both Oliver and I are dedicated yoga practitioners and we apply the philosophy to all aspects of our lives from our family to our work. With our method, we aim to completely change the way people purchase, raise and regard poultry. We honor the role of chickens on the homestead and respect their right to live a meaningful life, enjoying all the stages of a chickens lifecycle.

“I never expected that 6 little birds would change the way I saw the world. That is the beauty of life, it sneaks up on you in ways you’d never expect.”

— Leanne Horvath

Our Method

  • Our chickens free range in the forest in New Hampshire rather than pasture, offering a diverse diet, shade, and play.

  • Our chicks are hatched under a retired hen and taught to forage, play and protect themselves.

  • Our Roosters have important roles on the farm and are not culled at hatch like many large hatcheries.

  • Our retired laying hens become setters instead of soup.

  • Birds that are not fit for breeding are used to produce eggs for humans to eat.

  • We breed dual purpose birds that are hardy and do well in the cold New England winters.

  • We do not use bulbs or artificial light

  • We do not ship our birds outside of new England to reduce mortality rates.

  • We offer education and support to our customers for the life of their flock.

  • Our predator determent method employs trained Live Stock Guardian Dogs to deter potential predators.

  • We repurpose or recylce all possible elements of our birds waste in creative ways
